Challenges

Our client is one of the important ministries of Qatar serving its citizens and residents with various services related to environmental aspects. It’s IT department had envisioned a project for the implementation of enterprise GIS catering to the users of various department of ministry.

Users from different departments used to work separately on different projects with possibilities of duplication of work. Each unit/department had its own collection of spatial and non-spatial data subsets and applications for its users. Collaboration and sharing of the information in secured and authorized fashion was one of the main challenges.

Solution

Octaware initially conducted a comprehensive exercise of user need studied which involved meeting and studying the existing databases, applications and infrastructure. A detail level of Software Requirement specification was prepared based on these meetings and reviews. This was discussed with multiple reviews from the department users and project stake holders. Octaware successfully completed this project over a period of 9 months and carried out support and maintenance work.

Based on the approved SRS, the design and development of the project started. During the entire duration of the project the MOE stake holders and project team were involved in close coordination for the execution of the project. Octaware managed this project in onsite/offshore execution model. Octaware’s Onsite PM was the coordinating person between the client project team and offshore development team.

During the initial phase of the project Octaware R&D team coordinated with the client to discuss and finalize on the tools and technologies to be used for project. Based on the industry standard and best practices suggested by ESRI and Microsoft, the web-applications were designed using ESRI ArcGIS Server Web APIs and Microsoft Silverlight as the rich client interface for the web-clients. The native smart devices applications were designed on iOS platform.
